Best Soil and Pots for Herbs

  1. This was such a helpful read, Pauline! I’m currently trying to grow basil and parsley in pots, and your tips gave me a lot of clarity. I didn’t realize how much of a difference soil texture and drainage make; my basil especially seems to struggle when the soil stays too wet. The reminder that herbs “don’t like wet feet” really hit home for me.

I also appreciated the breakdown of pot types. Since basil likes moisture, I’m now considering a self-watering container, while parsley sounds like it would do well in a slightly deeper pot with rich, loose soil. That combination feels doable even for someone like me who’s still learning.

One thing I’m curious about: do herbs like basil and parsley benefit from being rotated outdoors during certain seasons, or is it better to keep them consistently indoors once they’re established?

Thanks for sharing your experience and making herb gardening feel less intimidating!

    1. Hi Alexa, and thanks for the great comment! Herbs can be tricky to grow, as their requirements vary from plant herb to herb. I’m pleased you are finding this post to be helpful.

To answer your question: I have done with both basil and parsley.  Parsley and basil can grow indoors year-round, but they generally perform better when they spend part of the year outside. Basil especially thrives outdoors in warm, sunny weather, where it grows fuller, faster, and develops stronger flavor. Parsley is more adaptable and can tolerate cooler temperatures, so it grows well outdoors from spring through fall and can handle light frost. Indoors, both herbs will survive, but they often grow more slowly or become leggy unless they receive strong sunlight or supplemental lighting. For most people, the best routine is to let these herbs enjoy the outdoor growing season for maximum vigor, then bring them indoors for the winter or start fresh plants when the seasons change.

I hopes this helps. Please watch for a future post regarding this!

      Happy growing!

      Pauline
